Reading outside the box (Mystery)

Mystery Moor
Enid Blyton

During this book the four kids are out on a hunt to follow the gypsies. But they hear a plane coming. It drops millions of money. But they aren't the only one who knows about the money. The two men are on the hunt for the money. After the kids had hidden the money they were caught and kidnapped. Will rescuers come to help or not.

I love this book because it is short and quick but is a real mystery. I also loved this book because it is about horses. I would rate it a 4/5 stars! I would recommend to kids of ages 8+.

Budgeting

For the last couple of weeks me and Libby have been deciding our future. We first had to find a job and a house to stay in. Then we had to pay for tax, power, food, car and anything else we want like phones or a dog. What I learnt from this is that I will not be a millionaire once I leave home unless I win lotto. It was a challenge to find out the insurance and power. I enjoyed finding out the costs.

Learning how to use google sheets.

In class we have been learning how to use google sheets. We were given a sheet called Wicked Formula and we had complete it. We were given a potion and had to find out how many toenails, wings, etc were in it. On number 5 we had to see how many things she would have to buy for 137 people. Now I know how to use google sheets and I can use it for in the future.

All About The Watch

Watches are important! Where would we be without our watches? No one would know the time and we would always be running late. Watches are worn on a wrist and can be found in all sorts of different colours and shapes.

What was used before watches? Sundials. Sundials are a one handed watch that shows the time by using the sun. During the day the sun moves so the shadow moves around the circle showing the time. I know it’s genius!

But what about the wrist watch? People say the first watch was invented by Abraham - Louis Breguet in 1810 for the queen of Naples. Yeah, that’s right 1810!

What about watches now? Watches are now like phones. You can access messages on it and you can monitor your heart rate. In the future, I think your watch can make you dinner.

Quad Death
Writing Purpose: To inform other HNI students the rules of the game and to develop our creative thinking ability.
Audience: Mrs Ellmore and HNI students
IMG_0448.JPGIMG_0450.JPG

Use your creativity to come up with 3 alternative names for this very exciting game!
4 Nations
Rekit ball
Heads up

Imagine another class here at HNI has not played this game before. Complete the rules below to clearly describe the aim of the game and exactly what the rules are.
The aim of the game: To get the fewer points than the other teams.
Rules:
  1. When you catch or throw the ball you must have your bottom on the ground.
  2. DON’T throw too hard.
  3. To give a point to another team they must have all the balls on their side.
  4. The team with the fewer points win.
  5. Don’t throw the ball too high or you will get points put into your team.

Game Adaptations:
Use your creative thinking to explore possible adaptations to this game to enhance both the fun factor and the ability to win the game. I have given you one example for each category but challenge yourself with other ideas and thinking.

Attack
Defence
Game Plan/Strategy
  • Use balls other than netballs that aren’t as heavy so the speed of the traveling ball also speeds up the game.

  • 4 players from each quad are allowed to sit on the bleachers to stretch their arms and intercept flying balls.
  • Some people at the back can stand up.
  • If the ball goes through the bottom, the team that throw it will have an extra point.
  • People on the perimeter of the quad pass the ball to someone closer to the bleachers to allow them to throw it further into the opponent's area.
  • Aim for one team so they get out faster.
  • Have the good throwers at the end and tall people at the front so you get more balls over faster.
  • Make sure all you players are spread out.

Top Spot Competition

The cold misty air flows into my lungs making me gasp with excitement. The water gliding over my toes makes a shiver run through my spine. Diving in like a dolphin to find what mystery happens next, makes my tremendous mouth curve into a banana. Fish zigzag. Crayfish side step from rock to rock, sprinting against each other. Weeds tangle between my toes, iron chains in a jail makes me shiver. There I swim with my eyes glittering at the lakes view. No other place I would rather be.

This is my description that I will be entering about Taupo in a writing competition. The aim of the description was to describe a favourite kiwi place. So I choose Taupo where I love to go in the holidays.

Pony Whisperer The word on the yard ( 1st book )

Second Chance

This book I read the first page then put it down. But then I picked it up and enjoyed it so much.

This book is what most of you can relate to, except for the bit where she can hear horses. Pia's mum breaks up with her husband. Forcing them to move away with Pia's pony Drummer. But when Pia falls off her pony on a trek she stumbles over Epona. A statue which gives her the power to hear what ponies say? But then it all falls apart when she gets asked to go on tv about it. Will Pia get through the tv show or will Pia forget something that she can't do without?

Great for ages 9 - 12

The Three Bears Sort of

Picture Book
By Yvonne Morrison

This is a great story with lots of true and interesting facts put greatly together in a picture book. Great for kids but might struggle on a couple of words. Is very amusing and is a great book to read to people. Great illustration and love how it is different from any other book I have read.

This book is about a family of grizzly bears. They live in a abandoned house. But a little girl comes to their house uninvited. When they are not there. What will she do?
